Big Papi's lies: translating the Ortiz hypocrisy
COMPLETELY by chance, I just stumbled across David Ortiz's MLBlog page.
Let me start off this rant with a caveat - I think him being linked to steroid and PEDs is another smear on baseball; a black mark on the game, his character and the Red Sox Championships.
I love the Red Sox and I respect their fans and franchise. My best baseball experience ever was watching the Red Sox at Fenway. They have some of the most knowledgeable and passionate fans in the game.

This is, instead, a slash at Ortiz who, if the reports are correct, tested positive for performance-enchancing drugs and then got on his moral high horse about how the game needs stiffer penalties to stamp it out.
Watch ABC's news report on David Ortiz discussing the use of PEDs from earlier this year.
I could not let this freakish opportunity pass without being sarcastic.
These are my initial thoughts, my shoot-from-the-hip, my act-before-thinking irrational gut reactions. If I am wrong, I will gladly eat the biggest slice of apologetic humble pie. I'll even write him a personal letter of apology.
I was reading his latest entry and some things caught my eye.
Let me translate some of it for you.
• Papi says: "The main reason is because I've got a whole bunch of stuff going on off the field."
Marshall translates: "I've just been rumbled - my name has been leaked and I need some good PR."
• Papi says: "Things have been clicking for me at the plate lately, and I feel good."
Marshall translates: "I hit a massive 3-run bomb last night because I was doped up to my eyes."
• Papi says: "I'm back. I'm the kind of guy who a lot of people count on."
Marshall translates: "My new supplies have arrived. Please don't let me get found out."
• Papi says: "The first two months, I had a lot of ups and downs."
Marshall translates: "I was a cranky *** bitch trying to weed myself off the growth hormones."
• Papi says: "This team the past five years has been all about chemistry."
Marshall translates: "Without my cocktail of steroids, the Sox would never have won the World Series in 2004 or 2007.
You were better than this; bigger than this.
Your team deserved better. Your fans deserved better. How perceptions can change in a heartbeat.
Red Sox Nation has every right to feel betrayed. The rest of the league has every right to point the finger and call you a cheat.
A cheat and a hypocrite.

I am suprised you are not blogging about the Mets issues, you do know that the fact that his name is on list can still mean he had taken something which at that time was an over the counter item or a prescription item that wasn't banned, there is no indication as to what his positive test is for, now I total hate cheaters and think Manny should still be on a suspension, but I do prefer for all the facts before accusing....

Hi Outside the Phillies. I am not going to excuse the Mets off-the field actions. Instead, I have often made jokes about my own team. Most of my blog posts are about the Mets - I have already posted about the Mets game earlier today and I will probably blog about the 2nd half of the doubleheader. The Mets' antics won't stop me supporting them and I think you need a healthy dose of humor to be able to follow baseball in the spirit the game is intended.
That said, I couldn't resist having a rip at Ortiz. There is a chance he could be innocent, and I guess we will never really know until more details are released. As I wrote, they were my initial thoughts at hearing the news and are obviously ill-informed, rash and probably overcritical. Only time will tell.
Congrats at getting Lee by the way. Will it be Happ who makes way for him in the rotation? See you in the playoffs.

Really? You're that worked up over this? I have a few things to say about this... first of all... I'm not going to make fun of the Red Sox because the Yankees have had a few players who've done this. Secondly... who gets this upset over steroids? You're either trying to appeal to your audience or you have to buy a large case of chill pills man. "Oh, you're a liar and a cheat and a jackass" well, tough. He cheated the game, but so many others did and they entertained us when they played. The othrs who are doing it are entertaining me now. After all, that is what it is: entertainment. And thirdly, if you're getting so upset over Big Papi, why don't you rant on Hank Aaron, who admitted to taking amphetemines, or Willie Mays, who apparently as a New York Met had a bottle of liquid amphetamines in his locker? Or perhaps Mickey Mantle, who is known to have taken a steroid/amphetamine cocktail? Cheating has been rampant throughout the game since the beginning of the game, so it makes no sense to basically ***** and whine about it.

My beef with all this is why do they realease names at a time? The list has been leaked so go ahead and release the whole list. MLB and Bud Selig have mishandled this whole thing.

Ash,
Let me be clear. I never said or meant that cheating is acceptable or right. All I'm saying is that cheating has always existed and there's no reason to be outraged, shocked or severely upset that somebody else has been revealed to take the roids.

EJ, two main points I want to make. Firstly, just because something is widespread and commonplace, that does not make it right or acceptable. Just because 'everybody is cheating' that does not condone the actions of those who also do it. It is ignorant to think otherwise. So say that nothing needs to change because it has been that way for an xyz period of time is not the solution. You might not care about the reputation of the game, but thousands do. Saying you won't criticize Ortiz just because ARod got found out is also pretty pointless.
Secondly, my main issue is not purely with Ortiz cheating. It is about the hypocrisy of him calling for harsher penalties and trying to clean up the game.
People will always look to get ahead of the pack, and that is fine. For Ortiz, maybe it should start with working on his glovework, learning how to hit the ball to all fields and getting in better physical shape.
For kids at school who want to cheat on a paper or a multiple choice quiz - knuckle down and do some studying.

Amen! And I believe your translation was about as accurate as one can get. I had no idea you were fluent in manipulation. What a handy tool!

Ash: I'm still laughing my @$$ off about Ortiz. I know that Arod and other Yankees have done roids as well, but as long as Jeter, Mo, Bernie, Brosius, Tino, O'Neill, aren't on the list, I don't care about the other Yankees. Like Arod, they were just Yankees that cheated. They weren't the heart of our championships like the guys I named before. Ortiz was the heart of the Sox's championships. I think it is great that now that Ortiz did roids, Sox fans can't bad mouth Arod anymore. They ran their mouths and now they have to eat their words. I love it.

David Ortiz using steroids, that's just plain unbelievable. I am not going to believe this unless this is confirmed.

As The Onion reported, I think we can all be reasonably sure now that Craig Counsell was the best baseball player of the last 15 years or so.

It really is frustrating to see players that defined my generation end up being cheaters. I just wish we could get it all out now and be done with it.
